Statfold Model Railway Event

Set in North Wales based on a typical slate quarry dressing mill in the hills of Snowdonia. Melin Llechi has all the flavour of a once common scene in many of the slate quarries in the area. The period covered is between 1950 up to the 1970's a time when the quarries were buzzing to the sounds of various little locomotives scurrying about shifting the newly quarried rock to the mills for splitting & dressing into finished slates to help roof the world All locos are controlled using radio control via mobile devices therefore not requiring any power to the track.

Birchwood is a small market town in the south west midlands, it is mentioned in the doomsday book as a settlement consisting of a hostelry and some cottages all of which have been demolished and replaced over the years some several times, a survivor is the 15th century church which can be seen behind the railway, this has always been kept in good order for the townsfolk.

In early Victorian times a railway was opened from Birmingham to Bristol passing twelve miles away from Birchwood, the good people of Birchwood were keen to link up with this line and proposed to build one themselves, this was thwarted by two factors, the local lord of the manor who refused to allow the line to cross his land and lack of finance, the scheme was shelved and birchwood became a bit of a backwater.

The line passed to the London Midland and Scottish railway at the 1923 grouping and British railways in 1948, it is shown here in our chosen period of late 1950s early 1960s when much of traffic was still intact and the line busy.

Watch for the parcels stock still using the bay and the trains of goods vans which are taken up to the biscuit factory on its own siding under the bridge.

The layout is operated by members of Ilkeston (woodside) model railway club who will only be to pleased to try and help with any questions you may have.

This fictitious layout built to 4mm/0o gauge is based in the South York- shire/North Midland area between 1957/ 1962, allowing us to run both steam and early diesels from the BR Midlands period with visiting stock from the Eastern and Western regions.

Stock is a mixture of kit built and RTR. Fitting crew and lamps to the locos and real coal in the tenders is on going. All express passenger trains are close coupled.

The operating signals are a mixture of semaphore and two aspect coloured light. All track work is Peco code 100. This layout is controlled by analogue dc; the eleven operators use seven control panels and twelve controllers We try to take a crew of fifteen to exhibitions so operators get a break once ina while. Train movements are to a schedule for passenger and fast freight. The goods yard and slow freight work independently. Most of the buildings are scratch built although some modified Skaledale have recently appeared

The Layout is set on the fictional island of New Gelderland, several hundred miles east of South Africa. Originally a Dutch colony, the island was taken by the British in 19th century and served as an important naval base until after the second world ar. In the early 20th century, a 2'6" gauge railway was built to connect the main port and town on the island, Port Canning, to other smaller towns on the island, including the small military base at Fort Whiting. Locomotives were provided by a number of British builders, in- cluding Hunslet, Kiston, Namyth-Wilson, as well as American builders such as Baldwin. In reality, the layout was built to run a collection of colonial style 009 stock, and based on the Mid Illovo branch on the South African 2ft gauge lines in Natal.

Hampton End was a small branch line link serving a small village (Hampton End). Most of the freight that used the line was fish from the quayside, After the closure of the line many years ago, a group of local rail enthusiasts rein- stalled the track & buildings & purchased a few foreign engines & stock. Most weekends trains can be seen running. The buildings are from BR days. This international flair works well. Most of the trees are supplied by Ceynix Trees. Buildings are supplied by T&M models. Hampton End is supported by Fyna Vehicle Hire.

Spilsby is a rural market town in a predominantly agricultural area of Lin- colnshire. It lies on the southern edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds and north of the Fens. The railway station stood ona 4 mile long branch line between Spilsby and Firsby Junction where it connected to the main line between Cleethorpes and London.

The railway was opened in 1868 and from 1890 was operated by the Great Northern Railway. Passenger services were suspended in 1939, at the start of World War II, leaving only a freight service which continued until 1958 when the line was closed.

Locomotives were supplied by Boston Shed with a small single road engine shed at Spilsby station just large enough to hold one tank engine.

Turtle Bay is a 009 scale layout set somewhere in the Southern hemisphere. The layout consists of a busy terminal station with goods yard, and a large motive power depot. It was intended as a showcase for British Railways abroad, such as those found in South Africa, Cyprus and India
